チェコの建築家が設計した美しいドームを持つ広島県物産陳列館は、爆心地からたった160メートルの距離にありました。
爆発からたった1秒で熱線と衝撃波で広島市は全滅し、この建物の骨組みだけが奇跡的に崩壊を免れました。
日光の社寺 東照宮の真上には、北極星が瞬きます。
The North Star twinkles high above Tosho-gu.
古代から日光は山岳修行の場。
そこを江戸幕府の初代征夷大将軍・徳川家康の霊廟に決めたのは、風水や天文学に詳しい僧、天海でした。
江戸から真北にある日光で家康は永遠に不動に見える北極星のように江戸の守り神になったのです。
法隆寺地域の仏教建造物 五重塔の心柱は樹齢2000年以上のものだそうです。

世界最古の木造建築群、法隆寺。
樹齢2000年以上の檜が使われている法隆寺の五重塔は、世界最古の耐震建築でもあります。
塔の中心を支える心柱が振り子のようになっていて地震の揺れを逃しています。

An island renowned for its Jomon sugi.
Some of these Japanese eedar trees are more than 4,000 years old.
屋久島の縄文杉の推定樹齢は約4000年。
縄文人が狩りをしながら見上げたときには既に大木だったのでしょう。
この杉を育て支えてきたのは世界にもまれな年間平均降水量4000ミリ以上の雨でした。
知床 知床とは、日本の先住民族の言葉で「地の果て（シリエトク）」という意味です。
In the language of Japan's ancient indigenous people, "shiretoko" meant "land's end".
知床一帯は、鮭やニシン漁を営む日本の先住民族アイヌ族の生活の場でした。
流氷が運んだプランクトンで海に魚が育ち、それを求めてヒグマや大鷲などがやってきます。
動物たちが森で土に返り、豊かな森を育てるのです。
知床で命の輪がつながっていきます。

Kumano Kodo is a pilgrimage route where it is said that dead people come back to life.
高天原から下った日本の神々の先祖イザナギノミコトが葬られたという死者の国、黄泉の国が、ここ熊野にあったと言われています。
古代の修験者たちが荒行をした紀伊の霊場が、平安時代には極楽往生を祈願する熊野詣での人々で賑わいました。

島(宮島)そのものが神様と考えられていたため、島に建物を建てることが許されず、海の上に神社が建てられました。
この神社は、満潮の時は海の上に神社が浮かんでいるように見え、干潮の時には海岸を歩いて神社に行くことが出来ます。
As the entire island of Miyajima was regarded as a deity, no shrine could be built there.
Instead, a shrine was built over the water of a cove.
At high tide, the shrine appears to be floating on the water, while at low tide it is possible to approach the shrine on foot along the beach.

天皇は、中国の風水学的に見て理想の土地である京都に、奈良から都を移しました。
1000年近く首都だったこの街は、今でも日本の「公家文化」と、その優美な町並みを残しています。
Many centuries ago feng shui revealed that the natural features of the Kyoto area were highly auspicious, and so the Imperial court was relocated to Kyoto from Nara.
Kyoto later served as capital of Japan for nearly 1000 years.

春日大社の神の使いとして、奈良では昔から鹿が保護されてきました。
鹿を殺すと死罪になったこともあったそうです。
そのため、奈良の人々は早起きをして自分の家の前で鹿が死んでいないかどうか確かめ
万が一見つけてしまった場合には、急いで隣家の前に移したという昔話が伝えられています。
For centuries people in Nara have protected deer, believing them to be messengers of the main deity at Kasuga Taisya.
It is said that in the old days, a person found to have killed a deer would be put to death.
Legend has it that people in Nara would get up early to make sure there was no deer carcass outside the house.
If there was a dead deer outside, you'd quickly move it over to your neighbor's property.

What are World Heritage Sites?
日本が世界に誇る人類が生きてきた証です。
Japan's proud testimony to the course of human civilization.
世界遺産とは、人類共通の貴重な宝物。
人類、地球の誇りとして、
損傷や破壊などの驚異や開発などから守り後世に残していくべきものです。
World Heritage Sites are precious treasures shared by mankind.
They must be protected and preserved for future generations.
これは、建造物や遺跡、景観などを守る「文化遺産」と
絶滅のおそれのある動植物の生息や地形や地質、景観などを守る「自然遺産」
その両方を含む「複合遺産」の3種類に分かれています。
There are three categories:
cultural properties (buildings, archeological remains, human-sculpted landscapes, etc.);
natural properties (threatened species, outstanding examples of landforms and natural beauty, etc.);
and mixed properties, which combine elements of the other two categories.
